About RICE

The Institute is a Registered Charity. It was opened in 1986 by its Patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent.

The research carried out by the Institute covers a wide variety of areas and is intended to advance the knowledge and treatment of the more serious conditions affecting older people, in particular Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia and to improve their quality of life.

Research Institute Mission Statement:

To carry out and publish effective research by improving:

  1. knowledge of the ageing process
  2. the understanding and use of drug treatments for older people
  3. the quality of life for older people

To run Memory Clinics to provide:

  1. an in-depth assessment for people with memory problems, Alzheimer's disease and related conditions
  2. focus for research
To offer appropriate education and/or training to elderly people, their families and carers and to professionals

There is an experienced team of 12 full and part-time medical, nursing and research staff. Additional expertise and facilities are available to the Institute through its affiliation with the School For Health at the University of Bath.

The Director, Professor Roy Jones BSc FRCP FFPM DipPharmMed, is an Honorary Consultant Physician/Geriatrician in Bath and Professor of Clinical Gerontology in the School for Health at the University of Bath.
