Information for Carers

Carers often feel cut off from friends, relatives and neighbours because of the constant and stressful demands of looking after someone who has Alzheimer's disease or other dementing illness.

At the Research Institute we hold courses specifically for carers of memory impaired people.

Courses in 2008:

The course consists of 4 sessions, which will be held on Friday afternoons from 30th May to 20th June 2008. These will run from 1.30 to 3.30pm at the new RICE Centre building at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

For more information about courses or to provisionally book a place please contact the Institute tel 01225 476420.

Broad Aims of the Course for Carers

  1. To increase a carer's knowledge and understanding of:
    • current medical thinking on the cause of memory impairment
    • how memory-impaired people are diagnosed
    • what services are available to them and the people they care for
    • the roles of different professional staff
  2. To increase a carer's awareness of possible problems associated with memory impairment.
  3. To give advice on practical problems in everyday life and inform a carer of simple psychological ways to help care for a person with memory impairment.
  4. Provide an opportunity for a carer to meet others in a similar situation and gain support.
